line-height: 20px;">This week offers a practical exploration of the clown's take on personal, social and political issues.

From the third day onwards, you will be practising those skills in real life situations within meetings, conferences or during visits to different businesses and institutions - just you and your clown in front of your hosts.

The course is intense and invites you to explore rules around transgression and its limits. What is the right way for a clown to reflect, comment and play with the issues and problems they perceive in the world? Unlike the buffoon (a close cousin of the clown but with an attitude problem), the clown transgresses to reclaim and celebrate life's paradoxes. By fearlessly juggling with social, symbolic and archetypal references, the clown stumbles on and exposes those lies and truths others dare not or cannot speak out.

The ridiculous mirror image (of ourselves and of the world) that the clown offers us puts the human heart back at the very centre of our institutions. In parodying the games of knowledge, power, truth and religion, we reveal not only the light and the shadows of our world but also affirm and celebrate our humanity.

The group is limited to 12

Facilitator: Vivian Gladwell

<a href="mailto:bookings@nosetonose.info" style="background-color: white; How do we responsibly summon the Courage to BE?

Clowning is a state of playfulness that allows us to experience a child-like, naïve and vulnerable state of being ... and paradoxically we learn, grow, and are strengthened through reconnecting playfully with what makes us most vulnerable. This approach to clowning is not a technique (tricks, gags and routines), but a personal journey towards finding one’s unique way of being - by listening and being receptive, essential skills for any creative and imaginative endeavor. It is only in letting go of control that we begin to be surprised by the depth of that which is around us and within us.

The word “courage” comes from a root that means “heart.” Through clowning and connecting to our naturally playful and creative spirit, we can develop and sustain, in ourselves and in each other, the heart to be who we truly are, to trust life and ourselves. “Taking heart” is a profoundly inward process, and is an invitation for overcoming the fears that block us and keep us from being fully present in the here and now.

This course establishes the foundation for all our work and is an essential first step before going on to more advanced courses such as Social Clowning and the Facilitators Training. He performs at business events and conferences. He is the founding member of Nose to Nose (see www.nosetonose.info) and Fool View, the Social Clowning group. His teaching has introduced many to discover the transformative power of play and humour.

His particular interest has been into how to apply the insights of clowning to different professional field such as medicine, teaching and business practice. Vivian creates an atmosphere in his workshops that enable all participants – from whatever walk of life – to enter into unfamiliar and challenging exercises. Having completed Vivian's workshops, previous participants have felt an enhanced openness and attentiveness, a heightened sense of empathy, a higher degree of presence, increased improvisational skills and a confidence to apply these across all areas of their life. Sometimes our striving for perfection blinds us to what the world is trying to tell us. Great wisdom can be found in making peace with our shadows and our shortcomings and clowning celebrates all our humanity even those part of it we are desperately trying not to be.

This level III course brings a fresh new way of looking at impros by focusing on the many strategies we use for avoiding mistakes. The course gives a greater focus on theatrical and improvisational techniques and will feel very different from previous levels. For example, impros are repeated to bring actors to work in less familiar and/or comfortable areas.

Level 3 moves the work one step closer to performance and is an ideal preliminary to Towards Performance and/or Social Clowning.

Course fee - $560

To book this course - click here

To pay see below

For further details click here

Vivian Gladwell

Since 1988, Vivian has worked internationally as a modern day Court Jester and facilitator.

Vivian's students say that the course gave them 'permission to be playful again,' and 'an understanding that every little incident has significance.

You can read some testimonials about Vivian's courses below:

“From the very first minute of Vivian’s presence one had the feeling of being accompanied by a good spirit. So all the exercises we did – although they required us to overcome certain inner obstacles – were a step on the way to free oneself from hesitation and inner burdens. L.B. I would never have believed someone could make me play a square or a toy sword or whatever, but in the right setting I was able to do so. C. B. For me as a person and a teacher it was an extraordinary valuable experience to see how one can wholly captivate an “audience” when one is fully present. [vollkommen bei sich]. M.B. This approach to clowning is not a technique (tricks, gags, and routines) but a personal journey towards finding one's unique way of being a clown, by listening and being receptive, essential skills for any creative and imaginative expression. This course is about freeing ourselves from the "shoulds" and "should nots" that constrain our natural capacity to be playful and free.

This course establishes the foundation for all our work and is an essential first step before going on to more advanced courses such as Social Clowning and the Facilitators Training planned for 2011. Class size is limited to 12.
Please register early.

Course fee - $490

To book this course - click here

Please note

You will receive a $50 reduction, if you do this course as part of the two-year clown training. For further details click here

Vivian Gladwell

Since 1988, Vivian has worked internationally as a modern day Court Jester and facilitator.

How do we responsibly summon the Courage to BE?

This course establishes the foundation for all our work and is an essential first step before going on to more advanced courses such as Social Clowning and the Facilitators Training planned for 2011. Class size is limited to 12.
Please register early.

Course fee - $490

To book please click here and write to us

Please note

You receive a $50 reduction on the tuition, if you do this course as part of the two-year clown training.

Kristin Spaeth Crowley did not come to clowning by choice, but was forced into it by wiser others who knew where she belonged. It is only in letting go of control that we begin to be
surprised by the depth of that which is around us and within us.
In search of the authentic playful self.....
in all its messy and hilarious beauty.

To register or for more information:4angiefoster@gmail.com
610-935-0637

Date and Time: Saturday, January 22nd 2011
9:00 am to 5:00 pm

Location: Kimberton Waldorf School
(Lower School Theatre)

Cost: $75

Limit: 12 participants

The facilitator: Angie Foster is an actress, director, and clowning facilitator based in the Philadelphia area.

L.B. English Week 2004 (f)”

“I must say Vivian did very well and made us all feel very comfortable in the group and in doing these strange things we had to do. I would never have believed someone could make me play a square or a toy sword or whatever, but in the right setting I was able to do so. C. B. English Fortnight 2000 (f)”

“I found it remarkable how quickly Vivian managed to create an atmosphere for all the participants in which one not only felt well, but also safe enough to try things out that one wouldn’t normally trust oneself to do. For me as a person and a teacher it was an extraordinary valuable experience to see how one can wholly captivate an “audience” when one is fully present. [vollkommen bei sich]. M.B. English Week 2005 (f)”

Other comments from previous course participants:

Dr Deon van Zyl
This was the single most transformative and life-changing programme I have ever attended.

Sharon Olivier
The most refreshing insight was learning how to relax, tune in and respond to the moment. The facilitation was top class! I gained so many insights and skills that will benefit my training and speaking career.

OUR APPROACH
As facilitators, we believe we stay true to the spirit of clowning when we flow with the creative process of each person, when we nurture its emotional expression and the emergence of the imagination and when we facilitate and free actors to find their own clown, unique and grounded in their relationship to the audience.
It is our belief that by focusing on the individual we are, in fact, going straight to the heart of clowning which is the search for authenticity both in the social or personal dimensions of our lives.
The approach to clowning we have developed over the years has important echoes both in the fields of personal growth with our Clown Within workshops - and in the fields of social mediation with our Court Jester Group. In our workshops we have people from a wide range of professional and social backgrounds, of all ages, with or without previous experience of the theatre.
Many continue working with us because they find the freedom and playfulness of the work becomes vital for them.

What happens in a workshop
We work in a group of no more than 12 people. We start warming up with games, vocal and physical exercises. We then proceed with improvisations on a stage (alone or with others). Each improvisation is discussed to identify and bring out the positive and important aspects of our clown (and how it lives in us).

This is done with care and respect for each individual and within a framework of rules that ensures a secure and protective environment.

The Clown Within
The clown’s nose, the smallest mask in the world, is the mask that unmasks. Through the clown we can rediscover inner qualities of openness, spontaneity and play. The clown allows our imagination to soar, whilst keeping our feet firmly on the ground. Working with warm-ups, games and on the empty stage, we will find our inner clowns through improvisation, play and welcoming everything that emerges.

Watch a film about us

Encumbered by the expectations of ourselves and others, how do we find the strength to shake off the limitations and fears that isolate us and prevent us from feeling free? How do we responsibly summon the Courage to BE?

This course establishes the foundation for of all our work and is an essential first step before going on to more advanced courses such as Social Clowning and the Facilitators Training planned for 2011. Class size is limited to 12.
Please register early.

Course fee - $490***

Please note

You receive a $50 reduction on the tuition, if you do this course as part of the two-year clown training.

Let us know if you need accommodation - we can put you in touch with participants offering accommodation.

Vivian Gladwell

Since 1988, Vivian has worked internationally as a modern day Court Jester and facilitator.

M.B. It is our belief that by focusing on the individual we are, in fact, going straight to the heart of clowning which is the search for authenticity both in the social or personal dimensions of our lives.
The approach to clowning we have developed over the years has important echoes both in the fields of personal growth with our Clown Withinworkshops - and in the fields of social mediation. In our workshops we have people from a wide range of professional and social backgrounds, of all ages, with or withoutprevious experience of the theatre.

Ann Willcutt

Ann has been facilitating Inner Clown Workshops—“Fools That We Are”—since 2007 while completing the Clown Facilitator Training with Nose to Nose UK.
